Artist Statement

I’m Shay Chenette, a multidisciplinary artist who paints stories into being. My work blends fine art, live performance, body painting, and murals, all rooted in a love for texture, form, and human connection. I specialize in painting on wood panels and canvas, exploring depth, movement, and emotion through color.

Much of my work centers around figures and inspiration, using people as symbols of strength, vulnerability, and transformation. Every brushstroke is a conversation, an invitation to see yourself in the art.

For me, painting isn’t just about what’s seen; it’s about what’s felt, remembered, and shared.

I have art from my wonderful cousin from way back when I was kid that she made for my mom that my mom would never let her finish ..but the art that my wonderful cousin has made me are all so meaningful and from the heart. And even one of my pieces she surprised me with a memorial tribute to my mom and baby brother, and let me tell you it melted my heart... Growing up I don't think I ever seen her without a paint brush in her hand and I just love the passion that she has for black art, which makes me love it even more...and I'm proud to have a black artist in my family.
